Whole milk is here to stay!

Whole milk will remain as our main product moving forward. We will have our Whole Homogenized, Whole Cream Line, Whole Chocolate and a NEW Whole MINT Chocolate over the Holiday season!

This breakdown has allowed us to really reflect on why we started processing. As the only organic dairy in our region and because we were really proud of the milk our cows produce my parents built our processing plant and started making raw milk cheese in 2007. Then in 2011 we began bottling our milk in our glass bottles as well.

Our raw milk cheese and whole milk is really the most authentic way to share the incredible milk our cows produce for us. In a processing landscape where ultra high temp and extensive handling is becoming the norm we really want to get back to our roots and focus on showcasing the incredible product our area and herd create.

We also just needed a bit of a deep breath and the streamlining of doing whole milk is allowing us that. We have ideas for how we can bring back our creams at some point but it won’t be until we can ensure we can do it with zero waste. We are sorry the cream and our lower fats won’t be available.

We are so grateful for everyone that has followed us along this journey ❤️

Decadence in a bottle 🍫

We made a limited run out of chocolate milk yesterday using our full fat milk. Though it’s a biased opinion I’d say it’s pretty stinking delicious, extra depth of chocolatey deliciousness and such a creamy finish. In our farm shop now and delivering through the West Kootenays today.

Are you ready for whole full fat milk?

Today we did our first bottling run of whole full fat milk and we can’t wait for you to try it! It’s the truest example of the wonderful milk our cows produce and tastes absolutely fantastic.

To get this product our right away, we needed to get new cap labels printed and Rook Design Media in Creston was absolutely amazing and got them printed for us in one day, over 3500 stickers! We spent the day popping them on while they came off the filler.

Delivering through the West Kootenays and Creston tomorow, East Kootenays and Kaslo/New Denver/Slocan Wednesday!

Whole Milk coming this week!!

We have cried, we have sworn and we have problem solved. Unfortunately the parts I went to Seattle for have not been able to fix our plant breakdown issues. We do have parts coming from Italy but they will take a while to get here.

So we have decided to take the opportunity of this breakdown to launch Whole Milk. This will be our full fat milk, which is 4.7% right now. We will be offering both homogenized and cream line, in both our 946 mL and 1.89 L bottles. This is as close to raw as we can legally sell and is the most natural product we can possibly make. Hoping people will try it and enjoy and this will maybe turn out to be a happy accident.

We want to thank all our stores for being so understanding of this unexpected shut down as well as Brad at Pro-Cut Industries and Comfort Welding who are both working with us to get back running.

Hopefully I will have good news in the next few days and we will be back to supplying the Kootenays with our organic, grass fed milk.

Fall projects on the farm 🔨🍂

We are soaking up the last days of October and working on some projects around the farm. A beauty of the heifers and dry cows spending summer outside is it gives us time to do repairs and maintenance around the barns when they are empty. Today we poured a new feed bunk for our close up dry cows, this pen will house our cows for the last month of their pregnancy in the winter.

Huge shout out to the driver from Sullivan Stone who was incredibly helpful in directing us and suggested we use pails instead of shovel. Which though my shoulders disagree right now was definitely easier. Big thanks to my Dad Wayne that came back to the farm to give us guidance on how to set up the form and planning the rebar to hopefully make sure we don’t need to do this wall again any time soon. Finally super grateful for Eugene that has recently joined our team and will be doing most of the repairs and maintenance around the farm.

We are also busy getting manure onto the fields and some final tillage, so lots happening around the farm and looking forward to the slightly steadier pace of winter.

We were closed last Saturday so that Jared and I could get hitched on the farm. The cows were very happy to be front and center in our photos. We are both looking forward to continuing our farm’s legacy into the future. Stay tuned for additional projects coming up as Jared gets more involved on the farm.

The twins have been slow to learn to latch to their mom so have been bottle feeding to make sure they are getting enough. They have now decided Jared is their dad.

Beautiful set of twin heifers born on the farm yesterday. These little girls are tiny but feisty.

These lovely little gals’ mom will get to be a nurse cow and raise them and one other calf until weaning then reenter the milking herd.

With cows if you have a set of male/female twins there is a high likelihood the female won’t ever be able to have calves, so always a relief with twins when it’s two females.

Grazing at Kootenay Meadows 🐄

We are all excited to be out to pasture at the farm!

Our cows have 24 hour access to pasture. They receive new grass every 12 hours. We use a Lely Grazeway gate to guide the cows down two laneways that open depending on time of day. If a cow is ready to be milked they get directed back into the barn. It’s very interesting to watch them use the gate as often if they are sent back to the barn they will head straight to the robot to milk then come back down and out to pasture.

Turnout Date: Saturday April 19th.
Cow will be let out at 11am Sharp!!!

* Farm Shop and Barns will open at 10:00am and will remain open until 4:00pm
* We have volunteers to assist with parking
* Closest parking will be reserved for those with mobility challenges
* Viewing areas will wrap around the field. Follow the ribbons and white arrows.
* Please leave the parking lot area, and walk ways for those with mobility challenges.
* There will be accesses to a portable washroom on the grass near the barn
* Ice Cream will not be available until 11am
* To get to the Market at the Lister Park please use the main road. We ask the no one cuts through the field.
* The Farmers Market at Lister Park runs from 9 till 2 ~ There is will food food trucks, local Artisans, a band and Easter Egg Hunt. Most venders except debit, but it might be a good idea to bring cash.

In order to help with the long line ups we will be doing things a little differently this year.
* No sample table.... Instead will have a few ladies walking through the crowds with meat and cheese samples.
* A Merch Tent with Kootenay Meadows products will be set up (CASH ONLY)

* Pepperoni Sticks

Over the course of the next 6-7 months the cows will harvest close to 400 tonnes of feed from the pasture! Resulting in healthy happy cows, lots of carbon sequestration, a healthy soil ecosystem in the pasture and lots of delicious grass fed organic milk and cheese.

Huge shout out to the Creston Valley Fire Department for bringing us water last night!

Last night the water main broke in Lister leading to a water outage throughout our little hamlet.

Our cows can milk any time and each visit requires water to rinse brushes after cleaning the udder, backflush to remove risk of spread of any illness cow to cow, and certain cows require a full wash after their visit, on top of that we have 200 plus cows, heifers and calves needing to be able to drink water, leaving me in a very tight bind. The robots being down for that length of time would cause a loss of 1500 plus litres of milk and compromise the health of the herd.

I’m incredibly grateful for the Creston Valley Fire Department coming out, in frigid temperatures, with a water truck and filling my reserve tank. This allowed me to keep all the cows watered and the robots running through the night.

Also very grateful to Al at the RDCK for coordinating with, Ferg at the Town of Creston and Laura at the fire department to get it rolling.

All of our dairy products are made exclusively from milk produced on our farm from our herd of well loved organic cows. Then gravity fed down to our plant and processed before being shipped through the Kootenays, greater BC and Alberta.

We don’t use the 100% Canadian Milk label just because of how our bottles are printed and limited print space. However it is a fantastic label to look for when shopping if you want to support Canadian farmers.

Look for our glass bottles in your local stores and our aged alpine cheeses, Alpindon and Nostrala, or our soft fresh cheese, Crowdie.

Took me a while to get this posted but this is a bit of a tour of our bottle receiving, sorting, washing and collection of oddity’s we have found in bottles.

How long do our bottles last?

Just over 5 years ago we added “Grass Fed” to the fronts of our bottles, the previous bottles just had Certified Organic on the fronts.

With a month being the usual turn over of a bottle from filling to customer and then back to us to wash and refill some of these bottles will have been filled and shipped out upward of 60 times!

Glass isn’t always an easy thing to work with and there is a lot of labour in sorting bottles, scrubbing dirty bottles, fishing an array of odd objects out of them, loading our bottle washer and stacking heavy crates of filled glass, but it is so gratifying to see how sturdy they are and how long they can keep being reused. 4th Annual Christmas in the Buff

This is one of our favourite holiday traditions. We join forces with Buffalo Trails Coffee House and deliver some joy to our local seniors. We donate chocolate milk to make hot chocolate and Buffalo Trails donates time making the hot chocolate, beautiful house baked sugar cookies and all the fixings to put the deliveries together.

This year we visited 4 local seniors living facilities and were able to stop to visit and let them enjoy the horses. We are so happy to bring a little Christmas joy to these amazing locals.

4th Annual Christmas in the Buff

This is one of our favourite holiday traditions. We join forces with Buffalo Trails Coffee House and deliver some joy to our local seniors. We donate chocolate milk to make hot chocolate and Buffalo Trails donates time making the hot chocolate, beautiful house baked sugar cookies and all the fixings to put the deliveries together.

This year we visited 4 local seniors living facilities and were able to stop to visit and let them enjoy the horses. We are so happy to bring a little Christmas joy to these amazing locals.

Creston Santa Claus Parade

We love a good parade! The clydesdales looked incredible all decked out in holly and bells for the occasion. Was so incredible to see so many floats and participants, so amazing to see our community come together and have so much holiday spirit.

So grateful Kootenay Brass joined us for the float again this year. Their playing always adds such fun to the parade.

2024 grazing season officially over

Our heifers and dry cows stay out to pasture as long as we can keep them out. Grass is starting to run out and we had our first taste of snow this morning so it was fully time to bring them in.

After a weekend of breakdown rodeos I have everyone in and cozy for winter.

Grain 2024 underway.

Harvests this year have been disheartening to say the least. 2nd cut hay, normally our bread and butter was 50% it’s usual. The extreme heat and lack of rain took its toll on the forages and have also taken a toll on the grain. We were in the ground 2 weeks earlier than normal and I had hoped that would help give the grain a jump start but unfortunately wasn’t enough for the extended extreme heat of July.

Starting on wheat and definitely quite thin and expect low bushel weights. With the price of organic grain anything helps offset the costs but it’s hard to be amped for long hours of harvest when it feels like it isn’t worth it. Fingers crossed for some 3rd cut with this rain and then a healthy start for fall grain. All you can do is look for the positive.

We have whole chickens in the farm shop again!

Nothing tests a new relationship quite like raising some livestock together. Jared and I raised a few batches of chickens this year down at his farm, don’t worry we passed the test.

They are now available in the farm shop, listed as “Chickens for Love” 😂

These are a smaller heritage breed that we grazed using chicken tractors, if you are looking for a larger bird we have some little monsters from our first batch of Cornish crosses we grew. Please reach out if you’re looking for a 8-9.5 lb chicken.

Excited to be carrying Ebesse Zozo Hot Sauce in our little farm shop.

Made in Nelson BC

This hot Sauce is said to be at least "five times hotter than tabasco", Ebesse Zozo could definitely be tagged as being "extremely hot!". Ebesse Zozo is Togolese for hot pepper and gets its firy heat from the Habanero pepper, which is native to Africa.

Roller Crimping Triticale

Rolled a beautiful field of triticale and no-tilled in forage oats, peas, millet and buckwheat. The triticale mat will help protect the soil, retain moisture and provide weed suppression. The mat also will add an avg of 10,000 lbs of DM per acre of organic matter back to the soil and help build a more resilient soil with increased water retention capacity.

The forage seeded will be harvested as silage this fall and then alfalfa, red clover, Sanfoin and grass will be no-tilled in. Establishing perennial forage has been increasingly difficult as we are getting more sporadic weather patterns. The protection of the soil with the mat has helped in other establishments of our legumes but the grass struggled to make it through. So this year I am hoping that with the mat slightly more broken down both the legume and grass will thrive.

Always a gamble to experiment but hoping for the best!

After a very long week we have finished up our 1st cut of hay for the season. It takes quite a crew to put up this much hay in that time and I am so grateful for all the amazing people that help during this marathon!

Join our team!

We are looking for someone to join our team, as part of our post production cleaning crew. This position is 10-12 hours a week, Monday and Thursdays starting at 12:30 pm. Pay starts at $21 an hour and includes free milk. The ideal candidate has attention to detail, works well in a team and is reliable. All training will happen on the job, so previous experience in processing or cleaning is not a requirement.

Once training is complete there is potential to learn more about dairy processing and cheese making and more hours and responsibilities available.
